I have a fold up bike that came from Tokyo via the first Merchant Marine cargo vessel that reached Yokahama Harbor in late September/October 1945 shortly after the Japanese surrender. My friend's next door neighbor was a crew member on the ship. He purchased one of the fold-up bikes that comprised the cargo of his ship. The bike was made at the same factory that made Zero fighter planes which I believe is the modern day Mitsubishi. It is original except the rear wheel which I replaced. I still have the old wheel somewhere and the bike is still functional and unrestored except for the seat which decayed long ago. I'm interested in getting it appraised for sale. Does anyone know an appraiser in Orange County or LA County, California?

Thanks,

Daave

For placement of the decals, look at teh Schwinns in the Picture Dataabse above.
For the decals themselves, search the archives here. I know I've seen info on people who make decals.

Go to the Schwinn website and look at the Heritage and Collector pages. Someone should be able to steer you to repro decals.

Just bought a Vista 5 Speed Tandem for $50.00. I was told it might be a 1975. I see the serial numbers on the rear left drop-out but don't have a chart to look up the numbers. Also it has one orignal seat light brown and a replacement. Looking for a match to the light brown. Thanks

If you want the saddles to match, you're probably best off getting two new ones. I don't think there's much reason to keep this bike "stock."

MISC:   Larz Anderson Bicycle Swap Meet & Show posted by: Peter Naiman on 5/11/2009 at 5:40:58 PM
Hello all,

Contrary to rumors going around, the LARZ ANDERSON BICYCLE SHOW & SWAP MEET is a happening event this year and scheduled for August as always, but since Cirque comes before Larz, out of respect for the great group that hosts Cirque, we purposely say little about LARZ until after Circue.

As usual the show will be on a Sunday, but because we've not decided on a date the show is not on the Larz Anderson Museums lawn events schedule as yet, but most likely the show will be scheduled for Sunday August 9th.

We're hoping to get this show back to where it was several years ago as one of the premier Vintage Cycling events that everone wants to attend. Is recent years Larz has not been quite the same, mostly because former staff at the Museum decided to cancel the Swap Meet against the wishes & objections of both Maurice and myself. But the Museum has a completely new, supportive & enthuisiastic staff that are in favor of a swap meet.

Again this years show will be as always an all inclusive Vintage Show for all eras of cycling, and we encourage you to bring any era bicycle to our show. We are a little late in planning due to health issues I've been undergoing these past six weeks, but I'm back on my feet and we're looking forward to a better than ever year at Larz.

If anyone in the New England area would like to volunteer their help with Larz, or presenting a lecture it would be greatly appreciated !!

More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Best regards from the both of us !!

FOR SALE:   Old Tandem 1930's Project posted by: Brian Backus on 4/9/2009 at 8:55:17 AM
Have old tandem...perhaps 1030's...not sure brand...has "The Cantilever Brake" caliper on the rear...has drum brakes frt and rr. has three speed chain throuigh axlethat controls a sort of 'Cassette'. the "cassette" sort of slides back and forth in an index fashion. the shifter on the top tube says on it, "Made in Denmark." Really cool...not a cheapo frame at all...very nice lugs, and seat, bb, drop outs, pump peg, grease fittings, eccentric BB...has cranks, and front wheel. Rear hub also included. Has a 26x1 3/8" tire on front wheel. Frame is very rusty, and so are the components. Not sure what to do with it...needs everything basically...but is cool to mount on a wall as art and drink beer and talk about it...$100.00 pick up only. 360-893-7333.
