...I asked aloud "How did he go bad?"
"Spoke-squeezing" said the tall man reluctantly.
"Not to be rude" I lied "but don~t you--"
"Yes" came the sad reply "but I squeeze spokes by hand only to relieve stress. He squeezed spokes too but not by hand as God intended--he used unholy tools!"
"Tools?" I asked intrigued.
"Some say that he used old cranks to twist his spokes to evil purposes believing that his choice of semi-aero oval spokes would let him stop before he went too far. Others say that he was depraved from the beginning. But whatever he did his spokes became immortal--at a fearful cost!"

"You mean--"
"His rims anodized overnight--he no longer casts a reflection in them. And . . ."
"What?"
"I hardly dare speak it but his wheels--his wheels--"
A long silence ensued finally broken by a horrified whisper
"They hang from the upper spokes--like bats!"

The following message is an excerpt from an anonymous posting to rec.bike.tech several years ago. The story is filled with insider references to the arguments that went on there. It deserves like its subject to be remembered more often than once a year.
If you~d like the whole thing email me and I~ll reply it.

Patrick Did you look at Sheldon Brown~s Bianchi picture (the ~nanodrive link)? if you don~t know about Jobst Brandt and the description of how tensioned wheels stand on their bottom spokes you should look it up - since Sheldon died John Allen has added some commentary about Professor Abrandt Van Wheelsing.

Oh and I didn~t write this stuff it just tickles me. Sheldon Brown had a wicked sense of humor.

MISC New forum software?
« Reply #187 on: November 09, 2011, 09:09:59 am »
Posted on: 11-4-2011 by Vin - Menotomy Vintage Bicycles
I wrote the software for these Discussion Areas over 10 years ago.
At the time I thought that having a place where you don’t need to register or login but could just post a question or post an answer was the way to go.  But when it comes to posting pictures and maintaining continuity in a conversation I see this model lacking.
Here at OldRoads our stats are at the highest they’ve ever been.  So maybe this is the time to buy some forum software and have forum contributors have their own logins.  On other forums I visit I like to be able to search for replies to my posts and to upload photos easily.
What are your thoughts or recommendations?

-Vin

WANTED 1970s Ross Barracuda
« Reply #188 on: November 09, 2011, 09:09:59 am »
Posted on: 11-6-2011 by Kaeley
I~m looking for a early 1970s Ross Barracuda. My dad had one when he was younger and I was hoping to buy one for him. It could be in good shape or bad shape (it would be fun to fix one up together).

I~m located in NC....hopefully there is one nearby or one that could be shipped to me.
