I have recently gotten an old bicycle that I am trying to find out its age. On the front of it, it says HERCULES, Nottingham England. Can anyone tell me how I might find out how old this bike is, please? by: 209.240.206.208
Most likely, the rear hub will have a date stamp on it; "75," "68," e.g. and a month number. If the hub's original, the bike was probably built a month or two later. by: 65.78.2.207
If it's Nottingham, then it's after Hercules was taken over by Raleigh. I think that puts it at 1960's or later. Depending on condition and age, this sort of bike goes for anything from £1 - £150 on ebay over here (and it can be difficult to see why some go for more and others less!) by: 80.175.255.163
Yes Chris you're on the hammer with that price but also with the mystery of pricing. There's a sort of inverse proportionality going on I believe. The less you want a bike the less it costs. The more valuable the bike is to you, the less it makes. The more you want a bike the more it costs. The level of your budget will never match that of other bidders. To get a good bike cheap you need no one else to bid. To sell a good bike well you need 3 interested bidders. The bike you pay too much for without viewing will be a heap of rust and the bike you can't give away will be a perfect gem. Matthew - its a mystery, oh its a mystery! by: 62.255.32.11
Matthew... I believe you have just written a very accurate corllary... to "Murphy's Law". (i.e., if anything can go wrong, it will) Yes... a mystery... And another factor.... to winning a machine on Ebay... is to always bid on something that you can pic up locally... but the sellor has shipping insanely high... that's how I ended up with the '62 Armstrong. Cheers! Larry "Boneman" Bone by: 69.39.168.64
Bingo!! That's also how i got my Raleigh Roadster. Seller wanted $150 shipping but local pick up was okay!! by: 71.255.202.168
Hi People : ) I just got a Hercules 3 speed made in Nottingham as well! It does have the AMF on the part the seat goes on....but - after a little research I read that the older Hercules has 32 spokes on the front and 40 on the back (or was it the other way around??) and mine has 32 spokes in front and 40 on the back. Possibly a person who thought the change was a bad thing and changed out the wheels? I cannot find the date stamp on the hub. It would be fun to know when it was made. I am guessing since it is AMF it has to '69 - does that sound right to you? by: 75.51.77.209
I have a Hercules 3 speed made in Nottingham.. I am either going to "restore" it to original condition or sell it to someone that wants a vintage bike... thoughts? by: 72.241.40.87
Hi I just had a garage sale and I think I made a mistake and sold a 1969 AMF Hercules made in England for $6. The guy seem liked he was a collector but wasn't sure if it was worth anything. I had two of them for sale a men's and a matching women's. After I sold it I got online and found your site and got the impression that they might be worth something. I immediately pulled the other one from my sale and he drove back in wanting to buy the second one badly. I kept it. It is the female version. Do you have a range of what it's worth may be?? I am not 100% sure it's the 1969 model but they belonged to my parents and they bought them new just after (or just before) they got married (end of December 1969). Thanks, Shawn by: 68.201.6.33

Any ideas about the age of a Hercules 'County' mens bicycle I've been given. It has rod brakes, a 'Hercumatic' 3-speed handlebar trigger control and a Hercules B Type 5, 3-speed hub.The base of the rear fork has the number 10361AZ stamped on it. All its parts are genuine Hercules. Thanks by: 86.3.116.60
I have an AMF Hercules bike, 3-speed racer (women's) that was made in Nottingham, England. I received it as a gift new some time in the '70s. I was going to get a new bike, but decided to get it fixed up and ride it--it's in the shop now getting tuned up, new tubes and brake pads. It has chrome fenders and a light mounted on the front. Looks pretty good for a bike that old, but I have no idea what it's worth. by: 76.180.61.122
For Hercules 68's, try John's Vintage Bikes, a website located in Boulder, Colorado. This guy apparently repairs 'em, and has vintage spare parts. Try key word search John's Vintage Bikes and Boulder, Colorado. Good luck. by: 24.192.212.92

Hello - and thank you for this forum! I have a Hercules Men's bike that I think is dated before WWII. The head badge is Britannia WKS Birmingham and it has a Sturmey Archer hub with no date - "AW". The serial number on the bike is KH 351 3 and it has a cool Sturmey archer shifter (Low - N - High). Also has the word "HERCULES" in the chain gear sprocket. Any idea if I should sell the bike or keep it? I put it on EBay (probably a sin) but now I am having second thoughts. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks! doug by: 65.102.101.186

Hi. I just rescued two AMF Hercules. They seem to be a little dirty but in excellent condition. They have green and silver medals on the front that says "Notingaham England". Looks to have original AMF decals, fenders, pedals, etc. Just a little rust on the handle bars that cleaned right up. They aren't speed bikes. They have handle brakes. I couldn't find a date stamp on the back fender. Can anyone tell me a little about these orphans? by: 69.245.132.72

Hi all....stumbled across this thread after looking for any info on this Royal Prince Hercules bike I found at a thrift store. I am very new to any type of vintage bicycle collecting, but I think it is Pre-1960. It is a womens, black, a tad rusty but she rides pretty nice for only costing $20. If anyone has any other info that could help or lead me down the right path, I would appreciate it. Also, at the same spot I saw another ladys bike...red with the name "Tubor"(?) on the frame. also had a Lohman seat that said made in Germany..but the rest is made in England I believe. Anyone have any info? THANKS! by: 71.2.35.2
I have a Hercules Light Tourist. I too am keen to know exactly how old mine is. I believe it to be circa 1948 but can't be sure for certain. It's a ladies bicycle, dark green, has Hercules down the saddle post in white, with a crown at the top, single speed,no badge, though I believe it to be built in Birmingham, England. There is a serial number at the top of the saddle post but it's hard to read, the front wheel has England on the axle, and has a black, sprung, mattress saddle.Any ideas?? anyone??... by: 149.254.56.63

I have 2 Hercules bicycles: a 1964 male version, and a 1967 female version. Both are all original minus new chains and rubber tires from sitting for so long. What would something like these be worth in the U.S.A? Thanks. by: 71.63.176.172
Tony, I would be very interested to see a selection of pictures of your Hercules. Serial numbers very rarely help. I have never seen a British hercules with that sort of specification, and I met Frank Southall (pre WW2 Hercules Porfessional rider) and have rebuilt some preWW2 UK hercules. (50 years ago) There were several other companies with the same name. If you can't upload pictures send them to me by email. Keith by: 92.20.218.95
