VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Hugh Porter Bantel Bicycle posted by: Bill Silverman on 9/17/2006 at 11:11:17 PM
Just bought a circa '71(?) British bike off of Ebay and I'm waiting to take possession of it. A Hugh Porter Team Bantel bike with mostly Campy Nuovo Record components, 531 frame, tubular rims (natch!). However, after "googling" several topics, I haven't been able to come up with any info, history, etc. about this bike. Can anyone supply info on this particular bike, which shop made it, etc?

Thanks for posting. I am sure lots of folks here are eagerly awaiting photos. I know nothing about the marque, but can only speculate that you have just bought a high-end machine with a frame made by a small custom shop. Great find! Of course, you will also want to check those Campag. derailleurs and cranks for date codes.

actually, i have this same bike. Bantel Hugh Porter frame. I got it off Ebay about 3 years ago, only frame and bottom bracket, and built it up from there. I have found it quite difficult to find any information, although i did see the same frame on a german Ebay site. The guy claims he found it in the basement of an old bicycle shop. I'm curious to see how many were made, my initial thought is that they are rare at best, but i also want to make sure there isn't some asshole making these things and pawning them off as authentic. If you know anymore about them i'd love to know, and exchange photos of the bike.[p][a href=http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=5251541&albumID=0&imageID=30 target=_blank][img src=the_camera.jpg][/a]

I have been offered the chance of a HUGH PORTER BANTEL racer was offered it by a fellow VETERAN CYCLE CLUB MEMBER person selling it isnt asking silly money the person thought it could be a 22 1/2" frame trouble is am over 6ft and some frames of this size i cant ride unless it has a long top tube, as have two bikes which are both 221/2" frame but because these bikes have long top tubes am able to ride them okay, the person didnt say what kind of condition the bike was in but am hoping that it is in good condition and just requires a service to get it up and running this bike is located in east lothian scotland
