MISC:   Brampton Headsets and Bottom Brackets posted by: Mark on 1/20/2010 at 7:14:41 AM
Hi All - Happy New Year! In cleaning up the 1956 Standard Model K I posted about a couple of months ago, I discovered that under the accumulated dirt the bike was equipped with a Brampton branded headset (I believe a floating type, where the races are separate from the cups in the head tube), and the bottom bracket adjustable cup is also marked Brampton, Made in England. Can anyone tell me more about this company? Are these considered higher or lower quality components?

Hi Mark
Brampton were a largish component maker, better than many, making cast and pressed lug sets, pedals, hubs, chains chainwheel/crank sets, as well as bearings. The headset you have is one of the cheapest made, but serviceable, with 1/8 inch bearings very common on UK manufactured bikes. Apart from raleigh, most uk utility bikes had this type of head bearing.

Thanks Keith - I found out the hard way that the bearings are 1/8 inch (even knowing they'd be loose.....ooops).

I had previously promised to post pictures of the bike once cleaned up a bit - here are a couple of photos.....I'm very pleased overall, but sorely tempted to strip it down completely and repaint/re-pinstripe. I found a place to reproduce the decals, so part of me wants a completely restored to "as new" bike, and part wants to leave it with the patina it currently has....thoughts?

It's too nice to repaint. It will lose it's value and charm and years later when the new paint smell and shine are gone you will wish you had left it original.
I've learned the hard way to only paint bikes that are so far gone as to be unrecognizable and to prevent further corrosion. Or if it's a worthless piece of junk anyway and your daughter wants it pink.

Polish up the chrome bits, touch up any bad blemishes, wax it and ride it.

Well Keith, everything you said is exactly true but the headsets last forever and I am really fond of Bramptom's stuff I delight in finding bikes with their Brampton parts like their headsets on a bike.

the thread pitch is 24 t.p.i. and with some looking on e- bay you can find a new never used or installed replacement set and with new grease and a proper set up the bike will ride like new.

Hi Chris, Just as I thought I could forget all this, another trip down memory lane. 30 balls top and bottom, with a little grease to retain them. You could get away with 26, some cheap bikes used curved spacers between the balls. A length of 1 1/8 tubing cut from a wreck, to tap down the race on the fork crown. slide the other bottom race upwards over the fork column and turn the fork upright. With the top screwed race and the insert race placed on the top head lug, insert the forks and screw down the top race. Tabbed washer, lamp bracket etc., and apply the top lock nut. Final adjustment and tightening when the reassembly is complete. In the 1950's we sold the insert races for 4 pence each, An average workman would have take home pay about 400 times 4 pence.

Hello there... I just got a super old bike frame I think 40s or 50s... and it came with 3 parts of a brampton headset... it looks almost like an integrated headset but I have NO idea where to get the remaining parts and does this kind of headset have a special name... all I have is the top and bottom cut that sit in the flanged out part of the headtube and I think race... its a bit different shape to the other 2 pieces.... Plz help!

These headsets were used on almost all british utility bikes except raleigh. So BSA, Phillips, Hercules and many others. Not too accurately made, but virtually interchangeable, and 1/8 inch balls. Hope this helps a little.
