AGE / VALUE:   identify Columbia 20 inch muscle bike posted by: Dan Paulson on 1/22/2010 at 9:24:08 PM
ok, I picked up this, what I believe to be a 1973 Columbia 20 inch Red Fox. It seems to be all original with the 3speed Sturmey Archer England hub Carlisle tires, ARAYA steel wheels, and the serial # is 9 013 0690 It is red, has the Red Fox on the chain Gaurd and nice fox head on the seat. Anyway I have been looking but none of the charts go past 1972 so I thought you could help? I do have several pictures if needed. Thanks

Ok, I have done a little more research and found it to be a 1974 or ? Cause I guess the stick shifts were outlawed in 1973 so it has to be after that. Mine has a 3 speed trigger pull, I installed a rear brake cable and a front reflector, everything else seems to be original. So if anyone can positively identify this and confirm it being called a Red Fox, let me know. Thanks!

Please email me a picture. It has to be newer than 1974 because I see nothing in the catalogs up to that year. I own a Silver Fox which is a 79. Maybe it is newer than you think. I am an avid Columbia collector. I am sure I can help. The more pics and more details will help me identify. Also a serial#. I can match it up to one of my other bikes.

OOPS I just noticed you did post the number. It is a 1979 for sure. I would love to see it still if you would email me a pic. Also, I will give you top $$$ if you want to sell it at some time.

I think the most reliable is the Sturmey-Archer AW 3-speed hub. It is also the most common and easy to find used for around $20
