Hi, I'm new to this board, and to older bikes in general. I bought a Rollfast Roamer yesterday at Trexlertown. It seems to be a hodgepodge of original and replacement parts, which is okay since I bought this for fetching the paper and cruising around town with the objective of impressing the female population. Rides great, though the seat clamp seems to be stripped and the rear hub needs tightening.

The badge has a flourish of an 'R' and underneath says Roamer, then product of Rollfast made in usa. I could not find a serial number. It also looks like it may have sported a tank at one time, since there are two holes on either end of the top tube. There is also a small threaded hole on top of bb. For grease?

The rear hub says New Directions Model D Made in USA and looks in great shape so I suspect a replacement. I paid $100 dollars, which I realize is not a bargain, but did I overpay by a lot? Also, does anyone know where I can find a picture of the original? Any info on this bike appreciated. Thanks. Roland

The rear hub says new "Departure"and the hole is for an oil cap.When you rebuild the rear hub use greese then a drop or two of oil each mo. will keep the greese from drying out and getting hard. The bike builder will first have to be I.D. Rollfast had there bikes built by Murray and Cleveland welding ,please tell us what the front sprocket looks like.Or better,go to the data base and look for a murray ,rollfast,or roadmaster,or western flyer with the same style of sprocket and tell us with bike looks like yours.

Whoops, yes, Departure, not Directions. The closest crank I could find after searching the database was the first Rollfast listed, 1931-40, "with hanging tank" by Jeff. Mine has the same five-point star shape, though slightly different proportion. Could it be a replacement? It has zero rust--yet the frame itself appears to have been painted over, though not the fenders. My fender design is very similar to the bike shown, red with white pinstriping and a white patch on front. My rims are white with two red pinstripes that reflect light, some light rust. The proportions of my bike are longer, bigger. No longer has tank or original chainguard.

The oil cap I was wondering about concerns the threaded hole in the bb, not the fill hole on the rear hub.

I have a 139/40 Roamer. It was my dad's first bike. He was the only kid in the area that had a bike. All the kid's would stare at it he said. Mine is red along w/ red rims and white pin stripes. All original too. I put on White wall tires cause the originals (I still have) were hard as a rock. They were the original "chain link" tread design. As far as photo's, I have a hard time trying to find an exact. My opinion is (depending on condition) the $100. you payed is worth it. I know mine is worht some bucks but since it was my dads I will never get rid of it. My dad sat on it this past month for the first time in over 50 yrs.! Clean it up and keep it.

Some BB also have an oil hole--same reason as stated earler.Sturmy-archer oil cans had directions on where to oil and how offten.Take the BB apart clean(replace if needed)then greese and put together--a drip or two of oil each MO. will keep the BB is great shape for a long time.a drop on the head set too!$100 was not too much.

On the D.P Harris bikes I've seen, that threaded hole on the BB was for the chain gaurd bolt.

D.P. Harris Hardware Company distributed Rollfast bikes as well as dozens of other names. They were manufactured by H.P Snyder.

BB = Bottom Bracket (the part of the frame which holds the pedals and chainring)

1962 is correct for 1st year of Typhoon. You can determine if your bike is actually a 1957 by checking the serial number with the charts on this site. Should be located just above the rear axle on the left side.

I have a Excelsior X bicycle. It is a ladies frame with the Persons deluxe seat, fold down drop stand, braces in the locking fork. A new departure model D hub. It is maroon with white triangles on the fork.

I will recommend the various books on Schwinn to everyone. One in plastic on the shelf in the den and one to use and read and use for refrence.
However, I am not satisfied with these books. There is not a listing and pictures with descriptions of all the various models and other companies that Schwinn bought up. The pictures, some of them are way too small, some blurred too. There is tons of info left out. Tons! It is not written to answer collectors questions. Why not? Who buys these books? I'm looking for information about everything like rims. There are enough old timers around still and they could have been asked to contribute. There have been lots of really decent, hardworking folks who dedicated their lives in the bicycle trade and Scwhinn was(is) huge! These folks would have liked their stories told and a better effort put forth. Where is the prototype car shown in the book? A bit more on Adolph Arnold could have been included. He was a meat packing king. A bit about the times, the man himself. A bit of meat packing history while we are mentioning him would have been nice. The amount of pictures used in this book is abysmal. A more detailed telling of the racers, the tracks, the promoters. This could have been one heck of a project. Now don't get me wrong here, there are very good pictures of the bikes. The books do not fail to satisfy the reader. What I am saying is, there is so much more that should have been put in there. If you are a baby boomer wanting to read and see Phantoms, and Areocycles, and the balloon tire bikes from the 1950's these are in there. So go get the book! Am I the only one wanting more though? I do tip my hat to the efforts the authors went through to bring us what we have. I suppose there are real and valid reasons why more was not put in the book. But then again, excuses don't sell a book. Books should be written by passonate, dedicated,folks who have a burning love for the soul of it in their heart. Take a real effort and run with it. Do something great with it. This could have been hyped up in a positive way to aid in selling bikes. It's just to neat and clean for me. Most of the buyers are not real Schwinn fanatics interested in digging into the obscure history perhaps. If you are a senior and perhaps you lived and experienced these things my generation just sees in middleweight books then consider yourself lucky.

The problem is that when these things happen, the guy with the right last name or connections or the guy that gets to go forward with the project is not the right one to really do it. There is no dedication, no drive, no soul and it is being done for the almighty dollar. So we wind up with a end product that is passable but not supurbe. This is a shame, but it happens all the time.

I have a feeling that very few people would buy a book that was filled with endless detail about 50-year-old bicycle wheels. If you have a specific question, post it on schwinn.com's collector's forum and someone there likely will be able to provide an answer.

There was no information about the various types/ patterns of rims. I have been in so many old time shops acquiring and loading into trucks and collecting and I have these rims off ancient Schwinns before the 26 x 2.125 S-2 rims and there is no way to tell what went on what. What years and why/when the changes. The amount of pre- Phantom information is apalling and unforgivable. It's like somebody built up a brick wall and posted a sign saying "This is the past and we don't wan't you in this time period." "So forget about the details, factories, early personalities, patents, forget about the photos from these days."
"We didn't care to dig them out and publish it. Stories about the women cycle riders and the rational dress and what they went through to become cyclists is not gone into enough. Show some examples of ladies cycle outfits. Mention the skirt guards on the bikes and when did these come about? Early tandems are almost totally excluded. Why? A lot of companies made tandems! Delve into it deeper. At the swap meets there are some real experienced and sharp folks who can give you a better education and tour of great bicycle companies and history than anything you will read in a book. These people are dedicated and despite all the things I have done I am still a little fish in a big pond.You should see some of these collections ands listen to these guys! Take a camera into the barn and do an interview and put that into the book. Take me through it and explain and put that in the book. Showcase the whole wonderful thing. This experience should be taken down and put into the book. Who better to tell about it? When was the last time you saw somebody asking for information from folks for a book at the huge meets.

I'll bet you didn't know they made shaft drive bicycles in Michigan? Ever hear of National Bicycle Co? Ever see one of these? They were ahead of their time. Try finding out something about it. See what I mean?

Everyone wouldn't have to run to a web site if the books were better. The web sites would say to go buy the book, the web sites would be selling the book. More books would be sold! Answer the questions in detail once and for all and put it to rest and move on to another subject before somebody's heirs throw that trunk of letters out. We take time going over the same questions over and over again. Post it in a permanent section like they do on "Cycles De' Oro" (*no relation to page) Somebody could pull it up, read it all and not have to ask questions. There should be more and better quality re-production parts available. You shouldn't have to move heaven and earth to get something replaced, repaired or a question answered.
This is a race against time here and we go in circles instead of into the not yet explored and cataloged.

First of all it was the "National Cycle Co" and not "National Bicycle Co", a minor technicality. This company was founded in 1892 and sold it's name to the Davis Sewing company in 1913 which eventually became Dayton which eventually became Dayton Huffman and finally Huffy. The buildings of National Cycle were sold to Chevrolet Motor Co in 1913. This is because National had become more prominent as auto parts manufacturer than a bicycle manufacturer. National Cycle company made high quality bicycles and several set records at national and state bicycle races. Keep in mind that at the turn of the century bicycle racing and baseball were duking it out for teh national past time. So setting records was extremely prestigious and held with great regard. National wasn't exactly ahead of their time since there were several bicycle manufacturers making shaft drive models during the same period. What set them apart was their superior quality and dependability. That is why Davis Co bought the National name and continued to use it for decades to follow.
The knowledge is out there, you just need to know where to look and have the patience to dig through old newspaper archives, interview former employees and family members to find it.
One more thing. The wood rims used on National bicycles were also made in Michigan. Lobdell rims were made in Alma Michigan.

He's right. It was National Cycle Co. My mistake.
The bicycle was painted in Bay City blue and the tires were made in Michigan also.The Natco truck venture failed and the plant made Chevy car parts.
If it were not for a handful of folks of Gregs caliber it would slip into obscurity.

Davis bought more than the name. Plans, tooling, the name, parts. The building(s) today makes G.M. parts.
I was not able to trace anything of this past Davis Co. But Greg has. Thats awesome. The slogan was "A National rider never changes his mount."

The buildings that were the National Cycle Company have all been raised. Nothing remains from the original factory. The NATCO trucks didn't even last a year, more like 6 months and only about 24 total trucks were produced. Speculation was that they were of very poor quality. I actually have owned the catalog that featured the trucks. I have seen approximately 14 different catalogs from National. The frustrating thing is that the only real difference from year to year is the covers. The inside pictures and information is almost identical from the first year to the last. I have talked to the decendents of the Smith family which is the family that founded the National Cycle company. I know of a person here in Bay City that has seen an original National bicycle still in it's original wooden shipping crate.

You can determine a Schwinn's year of manufacture fromt a serial number, but not much else.

Look up the serial number charts here to determine age, and look in the picture database to find a similar Schwinn.

I'm not sure about the brand but I think Rollfast made them. There is information about Rollfast Co. at First Flight Bikes website. You might find some pictures to compare at Bikeicons, bicycle bill's site, or in the archive here. Or post a picture and maybe someone can help.

I have a Zenith Marshall wells bike with 26x1 3/4 tires. The frame has a decal says Made in Canada. The crank and rear hub are CCM. The bike is made by CCM. I also have a CCM that is almost identical.
I have 2 28" tire Zenith bikes that are made by CCM, the cranks and rear hub are CCM. Both from the 40's.
Linda what hub is on the rear wheel and is there a identification on the front hub.
I remember Marshall Wells stores in Canada back before the 80's. I think they are a Canadian company.
I have no other info.

What was the last year for the Chicago made Schwinn's? I have a Deluxe Cruiser with a serial number that dates from Feb. 1980. The Schwinn nameplate has Chicago in very small letters at the bottom and it has the Schwinn Chicago logo on the frame. I've talked to several people but no one can pin a year down. (Oh, bout 20 years ago)

The factory was closed by Christmas, 1983. It was a slow decline to that date with layoffs, production dropping, etc.

Foreign competition, lack of investment for the future, the building up other firms that would later turn on you when they could, labor union involvement whereas the competion didn't have to deal with it.The industry changed around it and not by it. An arrogant,inflexible, 4th generation leader with no vision, and who would blow cigarette smoke in your face and not listen to your ideas or comments.
The fact the company has been sold and bought and sold this many times is not a good thing.

I have a '49 Scwhinn girl's bike that was resto'd as a rider not a show bike. It has professional custom paint in lavender and coral green. Custom wheels (Sturmey-Archer 3-speed coaster in back, drum brake in front), on Sun-Rims with cross-laced spokes. Newer chrome fenders, crank. Original luggage rack and fork braces. I believe some of the take-off parts are still here, but I am moving and everything has to go soon. Set up like this, the bike has better performace and is reasonably rideable. I would like to get $150 for the bike (It cost $600 to build). I am in New Haven, Connecticut. Call me at 469-6780.

No pics. The bike is at Yale and has serious street cred. It's ready for a 20 year old chick to ride all winter for $150. I just had the outlaw bicycle shop tune it. The bike will work best for a girl without overly large breasts who will ride it in the rain, but I still have hopes. Probably will be sold tomorrow or Friday, so call if it is important to you. Original (quite faded - sunbaked) red paint. "Schwinn" still visible, has front badge, and Schwinn cross(?)on the seat post. Nice chrome fenders. Whitewalls, seat and grips in good shape - not original... Need more info???

I found a wartime bike made by Shelby with a "Peerless" headbadge on it. Perhaps yours is made by Shelby too? Any interesting features on this bike?

The tire's are 26/125; rear hub; rear luggage rack; horn mounted in the frame (just like all the old ones are); headlite on front fender w/ plastic lens; red in color w/ blue color features and white pinstipes. The only markings on the bike are the headbadge which again says "Peerless". My dads bike is a "ROAMER" Rollfast which is a 1939/40. The frames/features look so alike, that's where I'm coming up w/ the yr. for the Peerless. Any other info. would really be appriciated! Thanx.

Could be a deluxe Shelby-made bike of some type. Red and blue with white pinstripes was one of thier trademark colors.

I need info on a Schmidts Flyer made in Cincinati Ohio 1018 walnut st.this information is on headbadge,that is in good condition.Serial # is 37464D 1inch pitch chain 2 speed jockey shift New Departure rear hub,painted 26x1.375 uniroyal tires.Rubber block pedals,Troxel seat with 6 inch coil springs in rear and 2 inch diameter triple loop spring in front with leather cover.Straight bar english style frame and fenders with orininal burgundy paint with pin-stripes.Bike is geared extremely high and rides fine,handel bars are pull back with the grips parrelel to one another. I would like to know if there might be a way to tell it's age and value. Bike may be for sale,don't know yet if owner will sell,He wanted me to help him find info and stated he did not want to give it away. Thank You;Please help I'm no bike guru.

John,I have a bike I've been working on that is very similar to the one you discribe.Is there any way you might emai me a photo of the bike.I would like to see the original paint and stripping(mine was sanded & painted when I got it)and for your info I paid $100 for mine and now I see on ebay the compleat 2 speed rear hub ( new departure) going for over $100 --sam PS this is a light weight bike but you were right to post here because the L/W group wouldn't know about it!

Serial # on left rear drop out is R4 4007. I'm trying to verify it's a Schwinn & if so, what year. I just picked it up & it is set up as an 80's bmx/cruiser.
