| A friend was cleaning out his mother's house and found 2 bikes that had been stored there for many years. Supposedly both were sold to a relative in 1941 at a Western Auto store. One is a ladies The World Schwinn with a serial number of H89804. The men's bike is more of a problem. The headbadge is gone, and I cannot find any make or model markings on the frame. It has a serial number on the bottom bracket shell, but the numbers/letters are a bit crude like they were hammered on by hand. As best as I can tell they are HJJ, and then below that 3186. The bike is a one speed coaster brake with new departure hubs front and rear. It has what I believe is called a skip link chain, and the saddle has what looks to be HOBDALE embossed on it. It has Firestone High Speed 2.125 tires on it.
Does anyone have a clue what this men's bike could be? Would anyone be intrested in these bikes?
I will try to find the camera to take some pictures, but until then, what do you think.

| They both sound interesting. What model is the New Departure rear hub? That will help date it.

| I think the problem bike might be a Huffman - chainguard and chainwheel look possible. 41 looks real close. Wonder if they made bikes for Western Auto? by: 209.7.150.163 |

| Ok, this bike has the old leather seat with 3 springs, and 28"x1 1/2 tires, 36 spokes, the sprocket has 5 heart shaped cutouts, with little 3/4" circles too....I could find no name..and it looks like where the emblem used to be it's white, though now painted red, the front tire says Leicester Rubber co. Ltd. Granby Cord British Manufactured. The rear tire is United states No. 77 Giant chain Tread. There is also a red reflector on the back fender which has 19 circular raised nobs...and is about 2 1/2" across. Any suggestions on where to research,or what type-kind-etc. would be very much appreciated.... Thanks all! by: 65.167.69.160 |

| Your tires are the kind that were going out of style in 1930. I looked at a lot of pictures on Nostalgic.net and didn't find one that I thought met your description. Take a look at http://www.nostalgic.net/pictures/244.htm or http://www.nostalgic.net/index.asp?S=arc/bicycles/1924gendron%2Ejpg or http://www.nostalgic.net/index.asp?S=arc/bicycles/1920%27s+Mead+Ranger%2Ejpg and see if your sprocket is similar. Take good pictures. If you can post them to the web, we'd appreciate seeing them. Dave's Vintage Bicycles is a good resource; the Wheelmen if your machine is older than 1918; the Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange; National Bicycle History Archive, if it's still there... by: 209.7.150.163 |
