I also would like to know this information.
I saw a great looking (blue - mint) Record Ace today. It had a Team Raleigh 1977 sticker as one of its decals. The components were Raleigh and Suntour. It was not real light as it was made of (20 30) high tensile Raleigh tubing. It was too heavy for a high end bike. I thought Record Ace was the high end, but I guess there is a hierarchy of tubing even in the Record Ace line. Correct? What is good Raleigh tubing on a ten speed?

Raleigh Record Ace seems to be a name used on a few different bikes. A few weeks ago, there was a beautiful Record Ace internal geared bike on ebay which closed at over a grand. I'm also aware of a very high end lightweight also named Raleigh Record Ace. It was made of 531 tubing, and was the cat's meow of its time (early 70's). The one you found sounds different still.

At one point in the 60's Raleigh starting using S or DL in front of the model numder to designate either standard or deluxe specification. The "S" designation disappeared by the 70's. Our "DL-1" was known variously as the "Popular" or "Tourist", and by model numbers 1,2,21,22,and finally DL1.

Took the day off to take the kids cuz my spouse is ill...met a guy in the auto store who had sold me a single speed Brit bike last year. He tells me to come over and have a look. Lo and behold there are his and hers Raleigh Superbes complete...a pristine ladys Sports and 3 single-speed roadsters in adequate condition! Got the Superbes...$75 for the pair. Bike budget now gone! Oh well...it's still a grand day to find a bike or two eh?

This last 26 inch wheel Humber has a stuck fork. The wedge was sideways inside the steer tube and I got it upright and it moves back and forth up and down. I took it to a shop and they tried and no luck. Should we try heating it? It is not a rust problem and I am mystified. It looks like I will have to bring another peace offering, probably more of that Tsing Tao Chineese beer.

If I understand: You are unable to remove the fork because of a frozen wedge. Heat should be applied to the outside of the fork tube to expand it, but how can you do that if it is in the head tube?
1. Hacksaw the bolt. Remove the fork. Heat the tube and then punch the wedge out (I have never had to do that!).
2. Haacksaw the bolt. Remove the fork and let it soak in solvent for a day or two. Punch it out from the bottom side with the fork threaded end on wood. I have done this and I use a foot long pin punch and it works great.
3. If you cannot hacksaw the bolt soak or drip solvent down the tube for maybe a week until it loosens up.

I don't think you need anything as drastic as heat, solvent, or cutting tools.
When I Was Very Young I once loosened the stem binder bolt so much that the wedge dropped off the end and stuck inside the steerer tube. Is that what happened to the Humber ?

I managed to retrieve it by looping a piece of wire into the threaded hole, and pulling it up through the steerer tube. It tends to tumble over and jam, so maybe use 2 wires. One as a guide rail, running right through the wedge threaded hole and steerer tube. The second, fed through the hole from below, with a knot or kink to catch on the underside of the wedge and pull it up.

FOR A BRIT BIKE YOU SHOULD INSTEAD BRING SAMUAL SMITH'S OLD PALE ALE AS AN OFFERING. Also, I don't understand the problem because if the wedge is merely stuck in the steerer tube, and not the stem, why can't you get the fork off? When I've gotten these things caught in the steerer tube I've just knocked them out with a screwdriver. On one occassion I used a spoke to hook the wedge and yanked it out, but it wasn't a tough one.

Christopher,If the stem binder bolt is loose can you catch it with all-thread?If the stem bolt broke off and you have the goose neck out try honeing the inside of the steer tube.Sandpaper glued on a broom handle should work ok.Good luck.

I saw 4 blue Raleigh Womens Sports bikes today ranging in price from 75 cents to $24.00. 2 were very nice. Is this common? I ask because I have not trained my eye to look for Raleighs in the past.
I also saw a two tone gray "Record" mens bike that was in rather good shape for $9.
Where does the "Record" fall in the Raleigh line in terms of quality?
Can you recommend a Raleigh book that shows all the models over the years?

"Record" was a common, bottom of the line 10 speed of the 70s. Not a bad bike -- the frame is made with the same plain steel as the 3-speeds -- but not a valuable collector's bike. My sense is that to be of any value, a 70s or later 10 speed has to be a top-end, generally Campagnolo-equiped bike with Reynolds or Columbus tubing. Now, if it's a 3-speed Record ACE -- it's a whole other story!

I drove thru a nasty storm with a erie yellow-green sky, pounding rain, construction, waiting until freeway was re-opened because I was going to rescue this collection from going to scrap at all costs! After coming back from the garage with all the things I was getting from my friend who is letting things go I had a pair of Blumels plastic Club special mudguards in luscious gold in my hand. I handed these to him to see and I asked how much? He said these were a gift and he threw them onto the driveway alongside the things piled up that I was taking home. I yelled NO!! Do not throw things like that!! Are you crazy? They do not make these anymore!! He did this so quickly that I could not stop him. Sure enough, he cracked them both!! I can glue these, but you can tell! and I am sick to see these get damaged. If I do not get back there he is going to throw away... god only knows what! Somewhere in this huge pile are the braces for them! I have rescued Perry parts from being thrown out. The struggle continues and I am walking around not knowing what some of this stuff is and I hate that.

I think I have some NOS fenders like those. I have just kept them in the bottom of the fender pile because to me they looked like cheap plastic junk. I have a bunch of those wire type braces too, several different styles. I'm surprised to learn they might be worth something. I may have to pile them up and put it all on eBay.

I have two sets of NOS White Bluemels light weight mudguards complete without braces(they are not at the bottom of the pile and I won't throw them) I also have two rear Popular mudguards with no hardware. I'll treat you right. Email for photos.

Are alloy rims size 26 X 1 3/8 unavailable now? I got a pair from my local shop and he said these were the last ones they had and that there would be no more available. A customer saw these later as they were being built and he was disapointed that he could not get any. I later turned up a pair of Mavic alloy rims with eyelets in this size 26 X 1 3/8. I was told that these were old stock 1970's 27 inch rim pattern sew ups that were modified at factory to be 26 inch and to use a regular tire and so I paid 30 for the pair and have these laced up with alloy hubs and stainless spokes. Very trick. I believe that this it all I will find unless I go searching like Inspector Clouseau for these. Has anyone been trying to find alloy rims for your Sports lately?

I ordered some alloy 26x1 3/8 rims from Sheldon Brown/Harris cyclery and I built them up for use on my Raleigh Sports. They are very nice rims and very bright, they must be aluminum plated rather than anodized. The bike is much sportier with these lighter rims and I really like them. They have the Raleigh pattern so they retain a classic look. Dealing with Harris Cyclery was a pleasure. Bill

Can anyone suggest where I may find information on this bike manufacturer (British I think - maybe based in Southampton,UK). I inherited a Rotrax bike from my father but have little idea about it's origins. I think the bike was bought in the 1950's and that's about all I know!

I¹m spending some idle time contemplating a creative roadster. One that is not authentic, but one that might give one the authentic ride of the Dl-1. And do it differently, maybe even better. I¹m thinking about the all day, up and down mighty hills sort of bike. One that you could take on a Century, without regretting it. One that would find flats not the fount of despair or sharp regret that they are now. (I¹ve changed the rear wheel in the rain more than once. I even bought the solid tires and they were terrible.) It might not look like the classic English bike, but would still feel great. (And maybe be close in appeal. Not like the current café bikes. Or the hybrid comfort bikes.) I am wondering who made or makes a similar frame dimension (especially in the 24" size frame) which may be a bit lighter? Do we hire a contemporary frame builder? Just go with an old Raleigh. What Road bike is close?
The steel wheels have to go, (unless we¹re talking special brakes for those heavy rims, and why would we?) I figure that we¹d do a standard 700c alloy wheel. But how skinny can we go before we sacrifice the go anywhere feel of the 28"? And for brakes why not a solid sidepull. Disc brakes are over kill. And heavy.
And while we¹re at it, how about losing the trusty SA 3 speed for a shimano 7 speed hub? If it is good enough for Mr. Sheldon Brown, it should be good enough for me. Why not a 12 speed or maybe even that terrifyingly expensive Rohloff? I am centemplating idly after all. We¹d stick with the North roads style handlebars. But do we wrap the whole thing up ala Rivendell or maybe go farther with the moustache bars and make an end of it. I¹d do the Brooks 90/3 seat, of course, unless someone has a better idea. I¹d probably have those Shimano pedals that you can click into or not.
Maybe I could make a fiberglass full chaincase, one that did the job and readily came off when you need it to. And wa s a bit lighter.
I wouldn¹t change the color, black.
I know I¹d miss the feel of the rod brakes ( others feel cheesy). I¹d like to be able to put fenders on, if I needed to.
Enuff already. I actually do have a demanding job and spend at least 1 1/2 a day on my bike. Why do I stay up thinking about a better
(or really just different) idea? It¹s my all too human condition.

You're describing my dream bike. We've kicked around the idea of an "American Roadster" or "Modern Roadster" before. I'm with you -- how about a 531 frame with traditional roadster angles and long wheelbase for starters. Aluminum alloy rims, hubs, cranks, seatpost, and perhaps even bars and stem. Lightweight mudguards. I like the idea of fiberglass or composite chaincase. How about lighter, higher pressure tires while we're at it? I too wonder about the brakes -- maybe a rod-operated drum brakes. I have an Indian Roadmaster (DL-1 clone) frame that I built as a fixed gear bike with 27" alumunum rim wheels -- it has a lot of the smoothness of the DL-1, but is noticably more efficient. Now I anticipate critics will point out that part of the ride quality of the DL-1 comes from its weight. I'll grant you that, but it would still be cool to combine some of the great features of a 28" roadster with some of the efficiency of a lightweight. A 30-pound 28" roadster!

P.S. I'd keep the 28" wheels at all costs -- big wheel dynamics is a good part of the "ride." We'll just make some of the large tyre companies come up with 28" high performance tyres.

I think all of your ideas have merit...but I would leave out the full chaincase.There are existing lightweight examples and they are still a pain in the butt when the rear wheel has to come off! Also they really are utilitarian...they are great for bikes left outside for weeks, months and seasons on end. Look at any Dutch or Danish urban street shot. For those of us who ride em and store em the chaincase is nostalgic at best. If you want nostalgia...ride a DL-1. We're trying to shed weight n'est ce pas? For this reason I would also opt for the 700c alloy rims. There are great choices of high quality tires available and they really are very similar in diameter and bead. If any of you have a dealer who sells Vredestein tires, ask them to order you a pair of the off-white Classic tires. They come in 700 X 45, 28 inches AND 26 X1 3/8 sizes. I just put a pair on an old bike and it shines! Finally I've also seen alloy "North Road" and roadster style handlebars and stems available. I think with the right roadster frame as a starting point, a sub 30 lb bike is possible by trimming ALL of the fat. Plastic mudguards as well?

Look in the 1997 Overlook Press book, enCycleopedia, under "City Bikes." Really, bikes of this description are being made in Europe. They are not just old roadsters -- they are new designs using Nexus, Sachs, V-brakes, hub brakes, and aluminum components. Some are very elegant, using wooden chainguards and mudguards, etc.

Hi! Found a weird one again-says RAYNAL on head-badge {brass} made in Birmingham UK.
Usual 20 coat's of housepaint on it.Wheel's are B.C.C.-F 28x1 3/4,Perry s.sp. coaster.
