Well, the Kiwi black shoe polish worked surprisingly well on the bikes paintwork. It brought out a wonderful clean shine to it. No white residue in crevices like with the Kitt Scratch Out. For a black bike it did wonders.
Spots on the enclosed guard where the paint was missing and where it was silver colored from the base metal showing, the polish did not fill that in or cover it up but that will need re-painting or touching up anyways.
For a oxidised frame I still go with the Kitt Scratch Out.

The tin of paste. There was a post here awhile back like three weeks back or something. This was not my suggestion.
It dries pretty quickly. Daub it on, rub it about buff it off. Does it cover small blemishes or scratches? Well, Yes and No. Not like I was hoping it would.
It does make the bike look wonderful, I am amazed.Highly recommend, yes.
Use the Kitt scratch out for removing oxidized paint cloudness, removing scratches and blemishes, better off with the Kitt.

Polish over the Kiwi? probably could but really the Kiwi is doing this. I left it alone after the Kiwi. I get the feeling this is an old school trick that I am just getting wind of.
I am going to have to find some cycle thread taps that are exact matches for threading on some of my bikes because I have 'gifts' from careless painters who shot paint into threads on the bike.

Good question! I have not tried the liquid. I think the guy who told us this said to use the paste.
Liquid? I don't know.
Maybe the liquid would cover the scratches. Try it on an inconspicuous spot first. Now I gotta buy more of this stuff!

Yes, that was me. Use the paste in the small cans. I originally used it on a very faded Robinhood, and could have fallen over afterwards! If you use very very fine polishing cream sat #7 to #11 first, then use the black Kiwi paste, you will be very happy with the results. If you have a relatively newer bike, it may come out looking just like new again. Mine sure as hell did!Good luck, and please keep us posted.

Me again, by the way, if you can find black paint sticks (at body shops, auto stores, or hardware stores, not everyone has them, I'll look for a supplier), you can fill deep defects really well with them. Clean out the scratch or what evr, and then rub the paint stick into the defact to build up the paint. Before it completely dries, you can polish the paint stick repair with a cloth, and if you are patient and diligent you can almost make an invisable job of it. Then, do the black kiwi business, and I think you'll be very happy.

I used the Kiwi polish on the 1970's icky, scratched, Raleigh Tourist D.L.1. that I have and it really came out wonderful. Amazed, like new! Then the Dunelt. Wonderful.

Question? will the "neutral" color do wonders on a maroon or green painted frame like the black did on the Tourist? I'll find out!

This means the shoe repair guy is the best person to drop the bike off for polishing. Can you see all the bikes lined up at the cobblers? Ha!

Yes indeed! I have tried a dark green on the green Raleigh I once had, and, I forget the color but it was dark red, I used that on a Raleigh LTD3 I sold years ago, and it worked more or less the same, however it did not cover scrathes as well as the black does. I think it made them a little DARKER as I recall, so they were just as noticable. My brother used brown on his copper colored "Sports" and that also worked very nicely. I would imagine neutral would work well on any color, it is after all a paste WAX. I'll give it a try on my fire engine red Cannodale road bike, and report later. I'm not sure colors other than black, neutral, and maybe white are very easy to find any more.

Looking for a regular Raleigh/Humber branded front hub for one of my three-speeds. I'm using this bike w/o the GH-6 hub-thus the need for a regular hub. It's destined for a Humber. Not sure if Raleigh made a 36H regular front hub?
I'm partial to older Raleigh stuff. Raleigh really started to let some of their third party components slide toward the end. Will swap too! I have Humber cranks and a Humber fork to trade. Looking for older, rebuildable Raleigh pedals
for a Humber. No offers of those newer Raleigh junk pedals please. Go'in snow too soon in the Catskills this year!

The did make 36/36 hole combo's in the 70's. The proper configuration is a 32/40 for the older bikes.

OOH! Glen's complete bicycle manuel, the 1973 edition!

It was 50 cents. I grabed it. Hey, 1/2 off too! 25 cents! Wow!
This book is chock full of really good pictures and text on overhauling 3 speeds, all sorts of hubs. The (Atom) Schwinn front krate drum hub is overhauled in detail with pictures galore.
Excellent book, check your used bookstore!
They tell about using a feeler gauge on overhauling a 3 speed Sturmey-Archer hub, and they give a measurement number. First time I have seen this, but it looks like very sound and detailed easy to understand instructions too!

The later edition ('86 or so) also has SA 5-speed instructions. That measurement mentioned in the post tells you whether you need a new axle key, this has helped me a lot with clean shifting difficulties.

Driving thru town, I looked up and in the store window it sat. I screamed aloud!
These people, in a sorry attempt to create a window display have a painted bike in the store window.
They shabby chic-ed it. A bicycle! They shabby chic-ed it!
Oh, I tell you it was an awful sight to behold. White paint everywhere, tires, all over.(shudder)
I've been seeing a lot of painted bikes recently.
People do not paint a car and drive it with house paint on it. You don't see painted cars in Shabby Chic! It is not done. Must be a good reason why.So why the bicycle?

Hey, it's just a bike! I have painted many many bikes myself over the years. I had one painted like a barcode for a while (it was a Raleigh too!).

I've said it here before... as a person who occasionally tries to sell a good rider at a garage sale, I've learned that there are as many people throwing them away as will pay more than about ten bucks for one. This is preaching to the choir. We all know that any well-adjusted and lubed bike is better than walking, but lots of people buy new ones no better every day at X-mart. I have seen a couple of rusty 3-speeds, lately, used as "yard art" with flower pots in the basket, so if you want to sell one nobody wants, put a basket on it, put some peat moss in the basket, and raise the price $5. We can't save 'em all, can we, Chris?

A local bike collector is going to Holland and asked what I would like him to pick up for me. I think the 28" rims are the same as on British rod brake bikes.
Anything I should get from there. I don't think he will have time to get the vintage stuff. If he can get parts I can post them here at a later time.

I am looking for information on a bike that I have owned for about fifteen years now. It is not for sale! There just seems to be paucity of information on this brand. It is a Royal Enfield "Lightweight Tourer". It has 531 frame tubes but nothing else special about the frame. The stem, handlebars and seat post are all no-name steel with a Brooks B-90 saddle. The usual 40/32 wheels with a Bayliss front hub and SA AM 40h aluminium rear hub (1950) laced to aluminium Dunlops (26 x 1 1/4). The brakes are of a center-pull/ cam-brake design with red Fibrax pads.

Any information about the bike and the company would be greatfully appreciated.

The cam brakes sound very interesting and those rims are hens teeth.A lot of folks would just love to have those rims and especially in this size. The fact that it's a 531 frame Royal Enfield means that you have something here. A nice little two wheeled gem. Forget about the stem, seat post, and handlebars. You can find alloy parts of similar vintage.
Have you checked out the book 'Royal Enfield' by Anne Bradford? Ask your bookseller to order it. Also hadland.net has a piece on the Royal Enfield Revelation which is not your bike but rather a folder. Still, I would read it. The alloy A.M. hub is nice, 1950 was a good year! I will make some notes and e- mail you if I have any info on this particular model Royal Enfield machine in my files.
Enjoy that bike but be be prepared to ward off folks who are gonna ask you to sell it.

A nice bike that could have been built anytime from the 30's to the 60's. The seat may give the best indication of it's date but we don't have any of those details.

Hi Bill, give it a new home I say it was pre 1939, because of the style the wheel size and the fact thta it has BSA branded parts. The frame is not one I have ever seen here in the UK. Snap it up and have fun, Matthew

Bill, I have a single speed B.S.A. which was bought new in 1951 by the gent I got it from. I recently compared it with one bought in 1937 and could hardly tell any difference except for some of the lining was a little different. Identifying the exact year of B.S.A.s seems to be very hard, especially as they also sold kits of fittings for other people to make their own brand of bike and then put on a transfer (sorry decal) which said "Made With Best B.S.A. Fittings". If you find any way of identifying it we would all like to hear how. Regards, Ian.

I have a couple of pre-war BSA's which I have tried to date. All I have found out is that they didn't use date codes only batch numbers. If you can find a BSA with a known date of manufacture and compare batch numbers, then you may have a chance. Unfortunately the codes do not follow consecutive numbers. I have a BSA Messenger Bike from the GWR railway that looks like yours but is much older. Probably from 1925.

Hi guys,how're you all doing??
Well,I'm looking for a couple of parts for my Gazelle roadster which are extremely hard to find locally.I need a nice Sturmey Archer 28x1 1/2" Westwood rim(for the front wheel,32 spokes).
I'm also looking for a REAR S.A. hub brake(drum brakes);the complete set:the hub casing(40 spokes),inner shaft,cones,bearings,the brake shoes,springs together with the metal plate and the operating lever,the whole assembly.(for the rod type).I'm looking for the SINGLE-SPEED type,where you just screw on the free-wheeling rear sprocket and everything is set to go.Preferably if it was from the 50's or at least 60's.

Is there anyone who can help me out?? I live in MALAYSIA.If anyone is interested in giving this poor guy a helping hand,please leave a message or e-mail me and we'll talk about it.Thank you very much.

William, 28" wheels are uncommon here, and shipping to Malaysia would be very expensive. Next time you're in S'pore, check out the "Ah peh" bike shops in little India, around Upper Sarangoon Rd. Also some of the Trishaw drivers that ride around Newton Circus might know where to get these rims. Drum brakes are also fairly rare in N.America, but alot more popular in Europe, especially Holland and northern Europe. If all else fails, I have a 40 spoke AG hub (three speed w/ dynamo) that can be easily converted to a drum brake.

William, I am in New Zealand and can probably help you with the hub and brake parts, I will check in the morning and email you direct. I have been unable to find 32 hole 28" front rims and I have been looking for years now (I have plenty of 40 hole repro rear rims). What I have found is 36 hole ones and a front hub which looks identical to the old ones so you might be better to go this way and change both hub and rim. Shipping rims is expensive because of the size not the weight but shipping hubs should not be too bad.Regards, Ian.

David, Every time I have seen one of this type of lock it has been on a Dutch roadster so obviously they are common in that part of the world. Perhaps you can track one through people dealing in Gazelles or other bikes from Holland. Regards, Ian.

I have one that came off my 61 Phillips Roadmaster. It says Super City Made in Germany. It even came with the key. It had a coat of handbrushed black paint on it but it should come off with a little effort.

I need to sell my all original 1979 Tourist. If you are unfamiliar with the model, it is the rod brake, very pretty black roadster. I fell in love with it and bought it recently for $250.00. I would be willing to talk about price. It has the original brooks saddle, raleigh bag, handebar bell and pump, as well as a coal miner lamp. It has a couple of dings and the fenders have some pits in the paint, but is real pretty otherwise---stunning really.

"Dunlop announce that, since they transferred the production of cycle rims to Raleigh Industries,it has been found that the economics of marketing them on what is a 'greatly reduced potental' is no longer justified."
The market had shrunk.
When did Dunlop exactly transfer production to Raleigh? What became of this excess tooling? Wasn't Raleigh already making wheel rims in house already, or not?
One thing for sure, the Dunlop Co. made wonderful rims. The inside of the rim is finished in this grey color/coating and the rims are solid and the plating is awesome. The 1970's Raleigh /Sturmey-Archer stamped rims are a diffrent breed and the quality was good but not awesome like the old school Dunlop's. There was a shift in plating standards and the finished product looked diffrent. Exactly where in time it changed I don't know but by 1963-1968 the bikes and the finishes went through changes. I have Dunelts with awesome chrome plate and then it slides a bit.
I cast a discerning eye not on the bikes in the loft but to the chrome plate on the wheels. The bikes were a treat to discover but I moaned "Oh, those 1970's vintage rims."
