I am trying to find a 1970 Raleigh Bicycles sales catalog -- particularly with pictures of the 1970 Professional Mark Two (road racing bike) which was a limited edition bike that year. Howdy all. My $15.00 allowance yeilded me a 71 Raleigh Sports. A unique twist is that it has drop bars...a single brake lever on the left for the front brake...then a 3SC Sturmey delivering the braking in the back. Why have I not heard of this variance of the Sports? Whas this a bike shop retrofit? Oh yeah...possible value on a barely ridden, 71 Robin Hood, zero rust, good paint.

So, does anyone know how to remove a track cog from a hub. I removed the lockring and tried to spin the cog off with a chain whip, but no go. It's like, totally fused. Any ideas?

Once the lock ring is off it should come right out.
Is it rusted on? Have you tried (carefully) prying it off?

A longer chainwhip or shove the chainwhip into a sturdy piece of pipe. Soak with liquid wrench or WD-40 at least overnight might help. The thing's threaded, so I don't think prying will do it.

You cannot Pry track cogs off unless you want to permanently damage both the hub and the cog. Use Penetrating oil, then get as much leverage as possible on the chain whip tool. The length of pipe suggestion might help -- and I strongly recommend a pair of leather gloves, because once that thing does break loose, you could be looking at badly skinned knuckles.

Best possible leverage is achieved by holding the cog in a sprocket vise, or a regular vise with soft wood pieces inserted as jaws, and turning the wheel itself. Not to be insulting, but one never knows; You are aware the cog is not reverse threaded like the lockring was? Sorry I asked. JS

Force Kills. you need to buy a chain ring removal tool. (bike Nashar.com) It is a bar w/ a chain on the end. The chain wraps around the cog and you simply remove it by turning ccwise. tighty righty, loosy lefty. Most hubs are made of aluminum and cogs are of steel. there will be no rusting or oxidation in between therefore extreme force is not needed. good luck

Now don't go selling this thing too hard, Jim. I plan to pick it up in a few weeks from Dean, the owner. I bought a new 25-1/2" Raleigh Pro back in August of '74 in a Mink Blue and Champagne color, but this slightly earlier Mink Blue and Silver bike would replace it just fine. Yup, I sold my original about two years after buying it because I found myself involved in Norton Motorcycles - an addiction I've never shaken. I've never gotten bicycles outta my blood, either, and it's time to step back into the premium machines. I hope none of you folk go snatching it out from under me while I verify the details.

Hello, I've been into biking since the early 1970s and have very fond memories of PX10s and Gitane Tour de Frances. For reasons of nostalgia I would love to get my hands on a PX 10 in a 25" frame size. The frame is the big thing. I'm well trained as a mechanic so the restoration would be fun. Can you help please?

best thing, a 1980 PKN-10E, but only its three main tubes
are d.b. Reynolds 531. Maybe that cyberspace bicycling

probably won't want to part with one of his. Good luck on
your project. I have a pair of HF Normandy Luxe Competition

I am looking for a 1970's magazine review of the Viscount / Lambert bicycle. They made two frames, one lugged, the other fillet brazed lugless. I'm interested in the fillet brazed lugless. I am making a claim under the frame warranty and want to show that the frame was unusually high quality and comparable to much more expensive bikes, rather than other production bikes. Can anyone help me with documentation from Bicycling Magazine or some British publication.

I remember when the Viscounts first came out. Did they
have a lifetime frame warranty, as was fashionable at the
time? 24 years is a good, long run. I would not complain
about that kind of service.

Incidentally, I got 20 years / 40K miles out of a 1971
American Eagle Semi-Pro (Nishiki Competition). When the
seat tube lug broke off the bottom bracket shell, Nishiki
was willing to give me a $150 (my original purchase price)
discount toward any new Nishiki of my choice, under my
lifetime frame warranty.

I just retired a 25?-year-old Peugeot U-08 because I
discovered a crack in the right chainstay.

I wonder whether John Franklin, author of "Cycle Craft" and
a respected British cycling authority and consultant, could
offer you some leads in the U.K. I believe he has his own

I own a ca. 1975 Aerospace Pro, but not being the original owner I can't tell you if there was a lifetime warrenty on the frame. However 24 years is *very* long life for one of those; they were know for breaking, usually the seat tube at the BB.

In any case, I wonder who you expect to make a claim to - the Viscount brand has been gone for decades. It was last owned by Yamaha, but I wouldn't expect much.

I've heard that the most frequent cause of frame failure on these early Viscounts was improper use of locks,eh, Dave? Lighten up on the litigation!

We briefly sold Viscounts sometime in the 1970's After several major failures of the "aerospace" front fork. (broken clean at the lower bearing!)We decided that they were a big liability and gave refunds to every one who bought one from us! Until a couple of years ago, we still had a few in the attic in the boxes brand new! We stripped the hardware and squashed the frames to recycling.

Hello, I've got an old Peugeot 10 spd with "record du monde" on the seat tube decal. The unusual thing about the bike is that it has a disk (very much like a modern disk brake) opposite the cogs on the rear wheel.) There are no calipers on the frame, but a bracket where one could be mounted. Has anyone ever seen this? Thanks

If the disk is a plastic one, that could be what they used on these bikes to protect the spokes from being damaged by the chain if a misuse happens.

I don't think you are speaking of a plastic disk? But in France, This type of Bike was not made with a disk brake. Never seen one .

I recall seeing MMAtom or Normandy rear hubs with a groove
on the left side, and always wondered what it was for. What
are the dimensions and composition of your disk? How is it
secured to the hub? Although I have never seen disk brakes
on bikes of that vintage (late 1960s?), there were various
hub-mounted generator lighting systems. If you find out
what it is, please educate the rest of us!

I have an old (not sure how old) commuter bicycle that I found while in college- I need your help in finding more about it. The brand is "National" and the model is "Alpha" is has f&r fenders, a full chainguard, generator light, rear rack, and, what I found most interesting, the brakes are actuated by rods. I've searched the internet for this brand, but came up short. Please help.

Looking at the pictures, my "National" looks almost identical to the 1978 diagrams of the Rudge- right down to the full chainguard, I looks like the Rudge over the Raleigh because of the different seat springs. More details about the National, is that is has Asian writing etched into the stem and seatpost. Also, it has two stickers that have been applied with similar writing, my guess is that they were for license or identification purposes. Did Rudge/Raleigh make these bicycles under the "National" brand name?

It's entirely possible that "National" is the name of a chain of
stores. Or the name of a distributor to independent department
stores. My first bike was a Raleigh 2-speed roadster, bought at
a small-town KY general store. The store got their bikes from
the Belknap Hardware co. of Louisville. Belknap had their own
decals and head badges. Their bikes were called
"Bluegrass", even imported Raleighs. Many bikes with oddball
names fall into this category. Compare the bike to photos of
"big-name" bikes; odds are you'll find one like yours. This
type of (house-brand)bike is probably a whole collectible
category in itself. Lots of luck finding NOS decals, though.

If it's a rod brake roadster then perhaps you should post this on the English Roadster section. Raleigh made most of their own parts when it came to rod-brake roadsters, and the stem (and other parts) would be stamped with the Raleigh logo, which I suppose could be mistaken for Asian writing. Look again -- is it an "R" within a line drawing? If so, it was meant to depict Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his cloak for Liz I to walk over. If it's realy Asian writing, then it's definately not a Raleigh -- they used Asian stuff on Lightweights, but not on rod-brake roadsters. Bikes of this pattern have been and continue to be made all over the world, except for the U.S., and they are made by the millions in Asia.
