AGE / VALUE:   year of orange krate posted by: Tom on 10/8/2000 at 5:31:34 PM
I am looking to purchase what is said to be a 73 orange krate with the rear disc brake but the serial # is MG073150,the 073in the serial # made me wonder maybe not all 73 had the j in the serial # or is this a 71 orange krate with a disc brake added. Is the serial # on the fork tube only?

RE:AGE / VALUE:   year of orange krate posted by Carl on 10/9/2000 at 5:31:15 AM
That date code is for a '71, so it sounds like somebody is mixing parts. If the price is right it still might be worth buying it just to part out. The rear disc setups go for a lot and the '71 dated frame can be used by guys wanting to turn it into a Gray Ghost ('71 was the only year for the Gray Ghost).

RE:AGE / VALUE:   year of orange krate posted by Ed on 10/15/2000 at 6:38:09 AM
That bike is a December of 1971 or in other words next years model. It is suppose to have a disc brake. It is perfect for someone thinking of converting it to a disc brake grey ghost. As a few will know Schwinn had the grey ghost pictured in its upcoming 72 dealers catalog with a disc brake setup. Do us all a favor and leave the persons name and phone number so we can take advantage of the deal.

AGE / VALUE:   Rear Atom Hub, for Schwinn Krate??? posted by: Greg on 10/7/2000 at 4:30:16 PM
Has anybody ever seen an ATOM HUB used for the back brake? I found a really nice Atom Hub laced to a Schwinn S-7 20" rim. It is almost identical to the Front drum of the Krates, but it has an extra bar to bolt to the rear chainstay of the frame. What bike is this from?? Help!?? I'm positive this thing was made this way.

Picture of the hub posted by Greg on 10/8/2000 at 10:02:41 AM
You can see the hub here:

I work at a bike shop, and this guy dropped off a bike to get fixed that he still rides. It has a red sparkle bannana seat
24X1.75 rear wheel, 24X1 3/8 front, apehanger bars.it is 5 speed with a shimono lark rear deraillure. Has a black T-handle shifter in a chrome housing between a split top tube. The only markings still on it are on the shifter housing it has a firestone "F" logo, and on the chainguard, that is kind of bullet shaped it I can make out that it said something, then "DELUXE", did firestone make a bike like this, is it valuable?

Sounds a lot like the 1970 24" Sears muscle bike in the picture database. Have a look and let us all know.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   WHAT YEAR IS IT???????????????????? posted by KingKong on 10/6/2000 at 5:02:55 AM
That first '8' is probably a 'B', in which case it would be a 1969.

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   WHAT YEAR IS IT???????????????????? posted by Kevin C. on 10/7/2000 at 12:08:12 PM
The "E" is 1969; the 8, which would be a "B" is February.
