What you paid for something, and what it's worth, can be two different things. I once heard of a guy buying an original Schwinn Aerocycle at a rummage sale for $10, for instance. It's worth about 1,000 times more than $10.

I have a lime green stingray style bike that says simpsons on it I was told that it is a 1964 bike that was made by schwinn for sears and only a few hundred were made can someone tell me if this is true. Thanks Jack

| Partly true - Simpson, if I recall correctly, is a name Sears trades under in Canada (Simpson-Sears, or some such).
However, I don't think Schwinn made bikes for Sears, at least not during the '60s. More likely made by Murray. Sears also sold lightweights made by Puch (Austria). |
RE:RE:AGE / VALUE: WHO MADE THIS BIKE
posted by Scott on 11/17/2000 at 5:47:28 AM
Schwinn did make bikes for schwinn in the 60s, or at least accesories. My father retired from Sears in 1981 as their controller (the man over the money) and he has told me that he cut and mailed many many checks to the schwinn company in chicago while his office was located in the downtown sears. Sears moved him to a mall location in 1971, so this has to have been in the 60s. Scott

Does anyone know what year or possible value of this bike ? eBay item # 484497927. I am new to the hobby and have never seen a chainguard like this. It read schwinn stik shift Sting Ray.

I am no expert but judging from the look of it I would say it is between a 66 to 68 three speed. And yes the chain guard is original for that bike and they did say Stik Shift on them as I have a 68 Green one that looks the same.

the bike appears to be a '67, maybe '66. the shifter is smooth, not ribbed like '68's. only fenderless J-38 models came with that "Stik Shifter" chain guard; deluxes have deluxe chain guards. the seat looks to be a dealer/later add-on.

I see that the bike has sold for $300.00. I just saw one like it in Long Beach, CA at a bike show, but it was green. The asking price was around $500.00. The guy's mentioned that the coppertone color was more desirable, and wished they had seen the bike listed on ebay before it closed. What is a realistic price for this bike ? I might start looking for one for myself.

I am wanting to build a 69 krate from the ground up, first & foremost i need the correct straight frame & whatever else you might have for sale.Does anyone know what parts should be stamped on a 69 krate/stingray?crank,handlebar stem etc, etc, etc. Thanks Tom
RE:AGE / VALUE: build 69 krate
posted by Carl on 11/9/2000 at 5:10:25 AM
Bars would be stamped 69. Crank might be. Remember there were 2 different shifters that year. '69 shifters are odd anyway, but if you are going all the way, make sure you have the early '69 or late '69 shifter
