Help! I have a Schwinn stingray fastback 5 speed, serial number KD85117 was wondering what year? I am also new to this game and was looking at this aftermarket spring fork on ebay (396883621) will it go on my bike? What kind of paint should I use to repaint my bike? And where can I get the stickers to replace the old? I know thats alot of ????'s but thats what this discussion thing is for ain't it? THX in advance, much appreciated. BO

It was made in 1968. I suppose a springer would work, but Fastbacks have such narrow tires that it might look odd.

Help! I picked up a musclebike and I don't know what it is. It's driving me nuts! Looks like a late 60s Ray. Leopard skin banana seat, unmarked hub with red stripe, GTX-442 Tractor Grip rear tire, gold frame, missing headbadge with squared-off ovalized shape, crown fork with abstract stenciling, unmarked crank, frame and seatpost binder. No serial number. Zip. Zero. Nada. (help...)

Sounds like it might be a Hiawatha, or perhaps a Coast-King.

Reasons why this is not easy to do(1.) This is (and was) a popular, fun little bike (2.) these are sought after and are fetching more than you think. (3.) many have been thrown away after the kid went to college. (4) The Lowrider bicycle craze has made the existing bikes ever harder to find. (5) There are a lot of folks like myself that are out and about looking for these, and we are stoping to ask the question" Do you have any old bikes in your barn, garage, shed, basement?"
I buy old Schwinns, old kids bikes." Do you know anyone else with old bikes?
We are out there passing the word, leaving cards around, hunting, always keeping an eye out for old bikes, but the public is starting to understand about keeping these, that they are worth something. Folks know about E-bay, books have been written, now grown up children, are calling mom and dad and saying "Don't let anything happen to my old bike, keep it for my kids!"

You can save up and get a really nice one off of the internet, or go out there and look, and look and in time you will find one of these but I cannot guarentee that the price will be cheap. This page is filled with folks wanting to find one just like yourself and we all want it cheap.

I have done fairly well, and I have the scalp of many a bike shop under my belt and many neat adventures but I have to tell you I have not found too many krates out there. But by all means go out and search anyway because you never know what you will turn up! This is the cool thing about it. And something will pop up when you least expect it, someone will call up and you had better have some cash $ on hand. You have to strike when the iron is hot.

Good advice. A local story goes that about 10 years ago a fellow had a list of Indiana Schwinn franchises and was stopping by each one, asking if there were any old, balloon-tired bikes for sale. The owner of the local Schwinn cyclery said, "Well, I have a couple of Phantoms upstairs, but they're not for sale." The man instantly said, "I'll give you $500 each for them." The response: "The stairs are down the hall and to the right."

Try going to E-Bay and do a search under Schwinn. You will find all sorts of parts. The first time you look it may not have just what you need but keep looking and good luck.

I just got an older (67)scwinn from a friend and it has a generator on it. He said the gen. was from a stingray. He also said that it had a light that bolted right on the gen. but it is no longer there. Can anyone shed some light on this generator mystery?

I have an early 60's stingray type bike. It says Goodyear Playboy. the front tag says it is a Hi-way patrol made by Columbia. It is a single speed, boys, gold & white. Any ideas where I can get some info on this? I know it's early 60's because I got it then and it still has a 64 bike license on it.
