AGE / VALUE:   1976 sears spyder posted by: Randi on 4/3/2001 at 7:58:58 AM
Back in 1976 My folks bought me a boys sears spyder chopper.
Chrome forks, ape hangers, fat slick, gas tank and all.
I still have that beast, which I credit with giving me Wile E. Coyote legs,
stored away in my attic. Anyone have an idea what it's worth?
I've been saving it for my kids (One girl here, another rugrat on the way gender TBD)
I never realized there was such a sub/counter culture devoted to old bikes.
Normally I dabble Civil War re-enactment and restoring 1930s
Ford cars,1940s-50s Chevy trucks, so any info about my bike would be appreciated.
This was my first bike and There are many memories associated with it.
(watching my friends blast up hills on their ten-speeds
while I lumbered on behind with only one;)

Hi Chris, I saw your inquiry on the old Stingray and saw where someone answered that they have a banan seat and shifter from a five speed Spyder. I am intersetsed in finding an old five speed 24 inch Sears spyder like I had when I was a kid did you make any contacts who might know where to find one and if so could you pass on an addres to me please? Thanks

RE:AGE / VALUE:   1976 sears spyder posted by Randi on 4/6/2001 at 5:17:58 AM
The bike I was talking about isn't a five speed shifter type,
it's the "chopper style" single speed with the fake tank
and looooong chrome forks... Like the one in the photo
database refered to as a 1969 girls model, but this bike
was bought in 1976. Does anyone out there know more of the
history and value of this bike?

   RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   1976 sears spyder posted by chris.s on 4/7/2001 at 4:24:50 AM
I don't think the bike was a production bike Ralph Nader would have never let that bike on the market at that time after win a war with schwinn about the shifters and lots of other safty things..

How much is a manta ray campus green seat with the racing stripe worth with a bad tag. The last inch of the stripe is worn off on the tip.The right side on the tip has a quarter size chunk missing out of it.The seat pan is almost mint has the reflector tap and the large reflector. The worst part is the rip on the left and is pretty much in the shape of a U.

all schwinn bikes value has jumped up because GT Bicycles bought schwinn out.

Unless something unusual happened this is backwards and about 2 years old. About 2 years ago the conglomerate that owns Schwinn out of Colorado bought out GT bicycles. Old news.

WANTED:   1966 Wards Hawthorne Musclebike posted by: Lu Pedrick on 3/27/2001 at 12:23:02 PM
I am looking for a 1966 Wards Hawthorne Musclebike. Prefer it to be a purple girls version with a white banana seat but will consider similar bikes. I had one of these as a child and have not been able to find any information about them. Could this have been made by another company that I may have better luck finding? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

RE:WANTED:   1966 Wards Hawthorne Musclebike posted by JOEL on 3/29/2001 at 6:47:30 AM
The Wards/Hawthorne muscle bikes were made by Rollfast. Either brand should be pretty easy to find. They show up on EBAY from time to time.
I have a girls' purple 60s Rollfast in very sad shape (cheap).

BTW: I would be glad to send you some catalog copies showing all models and accessories.

The Rollfast Scoot was close but it looked and sounded like the guy had changed a lot of things on it. Thanks to Joel and Christian for getting me the manufacturer name. At least I kind of know what I am looking for now.

There was a discussion here about a month ago on how to figure a Huffy's age from the serial number. Keep clicking on "MORE MESSAGES" at the bottom of the screen to find it, or use the search function which searches the most recent archives. (VVVintage - you should try to improve your archive search programs. You have 5 years of discussions but they are hard to get to)
