E- bay item #2152295034 Schwinn N.O.S. Stingray Orange Band Knobbie.
It's at $575.00 with 6 hours left.
I cannot believe this! but this is what these tires go to these days on e- bay!
I-ll be sick at heart until I find one of these tires for 14.00 and sell it for over $500.00. Then I'll be fine!
I was searching the shops back in the day but I never brought home these exact tires and boy, do I regret it.
I have gone through and cataloged every tire I hold in inventory. Gone back to every place I know of, looked and called up folks. A real search and I basically have struck out! Oh, I have come close and I have some neat things. But no $500.00 dollar tires are in my stash. I could never spend this much on a tire. All of the Sting Ray collector dudes can laugh at me and say "Keep looking, you poor idiot!"

There was a slik on there recently that went for over $1000. So don't be too sick.

I have been in places and seen tires hanging up on hooks or banded up with twine. Dust covered tires, all sorts, knobbies and slicks. Red bands, Whitewalls, Schwinn and other brands. Wharehouses full, back storerooms, lofts and basements. I can close my eyes and picture all these places and the personalities I dealt with. These were everywhere! I could have bought up tons of these tires and saved them and THEN learned that these fetch these crazy prices. I could be selling these and cleaning up! I went all over everywhere and nudged aside other collectors and got in these places. I picked up small parts, but why, oh why did I not pick up these exact tires? Not being into musclebikes is a excuse that will only bring me more contempt from fellow musclebike folks. "What do you mean you were not into musclebikes?" I will just have to sit there in pain and just mutely sob. At the next get together I'll be over in the corner with my head down in shame. I'll bring a few goodies and talk a bit but I'll be rightly shunned and disowned as soon as word leaks out that I'm the fellow that has no excuse to not have a ton of these tires all piled up. All of the fun and magic has left. I'll need to radically re- invent myself here, I have bottomed out. The proof is a collection without any $500.00-$1000.00 tires in it! This is what I get for falling head over heals for rod brake English roadsters and not getting into and staying into vintage kids bikes. Like more Raleigh Choppers and Stingrays. I have pictures of these posted up and I will try my best to find some of these but there are too many other sharpies to wrestle with at the trough. My hair is turning white over this aweful experience!

Yes i recall those piles of goodies lined up for the taking in the day. I do regret not picking up some ot those gems. Here's the twist, in my ever seeking quest for bikes, i came across a guy the other day who said i could take a pile of old Schwinn Continentals and Varsitys. Well i thankfully turned him down, not wanting the old bikes. So in a few years, will i kick myself again...

There was a Schwinn that used early Weinmann 27 X 1 1/4 dimpled or eyeletted alloy rims. These fetch nice coinage on e- bay! Like $165.00 a pair! Look the Schwinn's over for the parts. Perhaps somebody replaced rims or did something special.
I would save a really nice example of the Varisty and Continental and bikes like these will be worth a surprisingly high amount sometime in the future. I have met folks that won't part with the bike for anything. If you want to risk having this happen all over again, then go right ahead and leave it.

I had a brown Ross Apollo 3 speed. Now all I have is a seat post clamp. Why didn't I find and save the knobbie tire? thast went on the rear wheel. I remember this tire, it was one of the best, kick butt, parts about owning this bike.
These are going up in value. I am afraid to find out what the original tires especially that rear tire is going for these days. I hope to soon see a owners manuel or diagfram or a poster or something about the Ross Apollo. That has not been done yet. Barely anything is available on the net on these bikes. Hopefully I can help in the future by finding a catalog and seeing to it that it gets posted.

How can you tell if it is full size or Jr? It has a lucky 7 Sprocket and I measured my 66 stingray and the 67 was 1" shorter. Did the fleet have a banana seat or was it full fendered bike. Thanks for the reply. Sheridan

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Clips Under Top Bar posted by Russell on 1/3/2003 at 5:51:58 AM
In '67 you could still have a Lucky 7 sprocket on a full-size and a junior frame. The fact that it is 1" shorter leads me to beleive it's a junior size frame. I've never seen a Fleet except for a picture of Brian Mikami's Custom. I think it came with a regular triangular shaped seat with fenders.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Clips Under Top Bar posted by Drew on 1/3/2003 at 11:08:47 PM
Yes, the Fleet looked like a mini balloon tire bike, last year I sold a 'coppertone '67... with a half tank, crome fenders, same frame & crank as a jr. Stingray. It was a cool little bike and pretty rare...you never see them!

I just bought a Schwinn's Boys 20" Bike it was Supposed to be a stingray. It has banana Seat & high rise handle bars S-7 rims front and back. Serial #KC(1967) Copper Tone Color but under front top bar there is two clips welded on from the factory like for a tank. What kind of bike it??? Thank You Sheridan

RE:AGE / VALUE:   clips under top bar posted by Russell on 1/2/2003 at 3:52:04 AM
According to my Schwinn Collectibles book four 20" boys bikes came in radiant coppertone (RC) in 1967. Of these I think the Schwinn Fleet was the one with a tank. I saw a custom lowrider by Brian Mikami using a 20" Schwinn Fleet as the basis. I actually think you would have a cooler looking bike if could build up as the Schwinn Fleet. You don't see as many of these, but a Stingray has more nostalgic appeal for sure. Can you tell if that frame is full size or a junior?
