Hello, I just got a Ross Baracuda, It is a thee speed with a thumb shifter. It has front and, rear hand brakes and, a freewheel, If I read the reial number correct it is 0478187592. I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this bike for me. It is in fair shape and, should clean up nice. No show piece but, it siure will be fun to ride when I get it all cleaned up,
I picked up a 24" sears spyder recently and I have been trying to find info on the rear hub. It is a shimano 5 speed with a speed selector dial on the spoke protector with five positions and on the cap in the center of the gear cluster where the axle comes through it says "automatic five" please help...
I found a Sears 5 speed bike in the dump last weekend. It also has the Shimano Automatic 5 rear hub. It is an automatic overdrive built into the freewheel. As the bike is ridden an internal sensor changes the freewheel from direct to overdrive. There are 5 sensitivity positions adjusted by turning the protector plate. The indicator needle moves to defeat the overdrive. I find it amazing that in 30 years (!) of dealing with bikes I have not seen one of these hubs until this week...
I've never seen (or even heard of) the automatic five.
Can you post a photo or two?
